The Federal Trade Commission will hold a media availability on Friday, August 13, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. EST in Washington, DC, to announce the issuance of a staff report by its Bureau of Economics entitled “The Petroleum Industry: Mergers, Structural Change, and Antitrust Enforcement.” The event will provide reporters with the opportunity to discuss with staff the report’s topics, including: 1) the FTC’s merger enforcement actions concerning petroleum markets over the past 20 years; 2) industry trends in production, pricing, capital expenditures, and rates of return; and 3) trends at specific industry levels, from crude oil production through retail gasoline marketing. The report is the FTC’s third study since 1980 looking at issues and changing conditions related to the petroleum industry.
