Commission extension of time period:

The FTC has approved the extension of a time period in the following matter: Baxter International, Inc. Under the order in Docket No. C-3726 which concerned Baxter's acquisition of Immuno International AG, Haemacure Corporation, the acquirer approved by the Commission in this matter, was required to obtain all necessary approvals to manufacture Fibrin Sealant for sale in the United States by July 28, 2000. This deadline was previously extended by the Commission last year until July 28, 2001. The Commission's approval in the current matter - which was requested by the trustee overseeing the divestiture process - extends by an additional 12 months the time that Haemacure has to obtain all necessary FDA approvals to manufacture this product, until July 28, 2002.

Commission authorization to seek dismissal of court action:

The FTC has authorized the staff to seek a court dismissal as to two defendants in the following matter: Gains International Marketing. This matter concerns three Canadian telemarketing companies and three individuals who allegedly illegally market interests in foreign lottery tickets. Through this action, the Commission has authorized the staff to seek a dismissal of the complaints against defendants Arudchelvam Nagamuthu and Julie Turgeon. The Commission vote authorizing staff to seek dismissal of the court action was 5-0. (FTC File No. X010020; staff contact is Karen D. Release of updated FTC consumer alert:

The Commission's Office of Consumer and Business Education, within the Bureau of Consumer Protection, has released an updated version of the consumer alert "Good, Better, Best: How to Improve Gas Mileage." This document, developed in cooperation with the American

Automobile Association (AAA), provides many useful tips on how consumers can save money at the pump this summer. Divided into three sections, the piece offers advice on how to conserve fuel "When Gassing Up," "Before Heading Out," and "While on the Road." Specific suggestions include choosing the right octane for your car, being careful not to top off the gas tank, keeping your tires inflated to the proper level, staying within posted speed limits, using cruise control when possible, avoiding "jack-rabbit" starts, and others.
