William J Baer, Director of the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, has announced the appointment of Willard K. Tom to serve as Assistant Director for Policy and Evaluation, effective immediately.

Tom comes to the Commission from the Antitrust Division of the Justice Department, where he served as Counselor to the Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust.

"I'm pleased that Will Tom has chosen to join our Bureau of Competition staff," Baer said, in announcing the appointment. "He brings a wealth of experience from his work in both the public and private sectors, and I know that he will make an important contribution to the work of the Commission."

From 1981 to 1993, Tom was associated with the firm Sutherland, Asbill & Brennan, first as an associate and then as a partner, practicing primarily in the areas of antitrust and federal litigation. He received a B.A. from Harvard College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is a member of the governing Council of the Antitrust Section of the American Bar Association, and was the editorial chair for its two-volume treatise, Antitrust Law Developments(Third).
