FTC sends checks to people who paid for mortgage debt relief

The FTC is sending 1,821 checks totaling more than $2.8 million to people who paid Golden Home Services in a deceptive mortgage loan relief scam. The sham operation used many names including Golden Home Services, Academy Home Services, Amstar Service Group, Atlantic Pacific Service Group, Home Matters USA, Home Relief Service of America, and Westwood Advocates.

According to the lawsuit brought by the FTC and the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation (DFPI), Golden Home Services and its operators falsely promised to help homeowners get lower interest rates or monthly payments on mortgages and led people to believe its services were connected to government mortgage relief programs or COVID-19 relief programs, which wasn’t true. Instead, the companies collected illegal upfront fees and didn’t provide the help they promised.

If you got a check, please cash it within 90 days.
