FTC sends payments to people who lost money to a tech support scheme

The FTC is providing full refunds to people who provided victim statements after losing money to a tech support scheme.

The FTC and the Department of Justice sued Jagmeet Singh Virk and his company NTS IT Care, for tricking people into buying expensive and unnecessary tech support services. According to the lawsuits, the defendants used pop up messages that looked like urgent security alerts from the computer’s operating system or from Microsoft and Apple and instructed people to call a toll-free number immediately for help. People who called the phone number were tricked into paying for unnecessary tech support services.

NTS IT Care and Virk are banned from providing tech support services, engaging in misleading telemarketing, benefitting from any personal data they collected, or trying to collect payments from past customers. The defendants were required to pay money to provide refunds and Virk was sentenced to prison.
