FTC sends payments to people who lost money to a medical discount scheme
The FTC is sending payments totaling nearly $7 million to 47,166 people who paid Consumer Health Benefits Association (CHBA) for deceptive medical discount plans sold as health insurance.
The FTC sued CHBA, alleging that the company sold misleading medical discount plans to people looking for health insurance and made it hard for customers to get refunds or cancel their plans. According to the lawsuit, the company used a long list of false claims about its plans, including that the plans were widely accepted and would provide the same cost savings as legitimate health insurance companies. CHBA agreed to settle and was required to pay money to provide refunds.
