In a notice published today in the Federal Register, the Federal Trade Commission proposes allowing manufacturers of residential appliances covered by its Appliance Labeling Rule to place the logo of the joint Department of Energy (DOE)/Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) "ENERGY STAR" program on required EnergyGuides on certain appliances under specific conditions.

FTC Staff Files Comment About Proposed Amendment to Uniform Commercial Code
The staff of the Federal Trade Commission’s Bureaus of Consumer Protection and Competition and its Policy Planning Office filed a comment on October 30, 1998, with the National Conference of Commissioners of Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) and the American Law Institute (ALI) about a proposed Article 2B for the Uniform Commercial Code entitled Software Contracts and Licenses of Information.

FTC Settlement With The May Department Stores Company to Safeguard $15 Million Redress to Consumers;
The Federal Trade Commission has negotiated a settlement agreement with The May Department Stores Company (May), one of the largest department store operators in the country, to make full refunds totaling at least $15 million to consumers who having had their credit card account debts discharged in bankruptcy proceedings continued to make payments or face illegal collection efforts.

Marketer of Software Display-rack Distributorships to Pay Redress under Settlement of FTC Fraud Charges
William B. Chappie, the remaining defendant named in a Federal Trade Commission case involving marketers of software display-rack distributorships, has agreed to pay $70,000 for consumer redress and to be permanently banned from selling or assisting others to sell any business venture in the future.
