    One of the Individual Defendants in a FTC "Recovery Room" Fraud Case Agrees To Settle
    Angelo DeLon, one of the defendants sued by the Federal Trade Commission over his role in an allegedly deceptive telemarketing scheme that purported to recover money consumers lost to investment fraud, has agreed to post a $50,000 performance bond to protect consumers before engaging in, or assisting others in, any telemarketing activities in the future.

    Rite Aid Corporation has abandoned its proposed acquisition of Revco D.S., Inc. after the Federal Trade Commission voted April 17 to authorize its staff to seek a preliminary injunction in federal court blocking the transaction.

    Nevada Telemarketers Agree To Pay $377,000 To Settle FTC Charges
    EDJ Telecommunications, Inc., doing business as International Marketing, a Las Vegas company, and its officers, Judy Burr and David L. Ramos, have agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they orchestrated a scheme in which consumers were told they would win one of four "extremely valuable" prizes if they purchased materials purported to be part of "Say No To Drugs" or "Say No To Violence" programs.

    New Telemarketing Sales Rule "Strong New Weapon" Against Demand Draft Fraud, FTC Says
    The Federal Trade Commission said today that the Telemarketing Sales Rule implemented by the Commission will be a “strong new weapon in the arsenal against demand draft fraud and telemarketing fraud....” Testifying for the Commission before the House Banking Committee, Jodie Bernstein, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection said that although the Rule has only been in effect since December 31, 1995, the Commission has already brought law enforcement actions against a cluster of companies that violated the demand draft consent provisions of the rule.

    Nevada Telemarketer Agrees To Settle FTC Charges of Running Bogus "Recovery Room"
    Keith Parker, president of Desert Financial Group (DFG), a Las Vegas company, has agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they falsely told consumers -- most of them senior citizens -- that for an up-front fee, sometimes exceeding $1,000, they could recover all or almost all of the money that they had lost to other telemarketing companies.

    Ford, Young & Rubicam Settle FTC Charges Over Exaggerated Cabin Air Filter Claims
    Ford Motor Company and its advertising agency, Young & Rubicam, Inc., have agreed to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that they made false claims about the extent to which Ford’s MicronAir Filtration System can remove air pollutants from its automobile passenger cabins.

    As part of its ongoing periodic review of its rules and guides and in keeping with the objective to eliminate obsolete or unnecessary regulatory requirements, the Federal Trade Commission is seeking public comment on a set of warranty-related rules and guides -- its Interpretations on the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act; its Rule Governing Disclosure of Written Consumer Product Warranty Terms and Conditions (Rule 701); its Rule Governing Pre-Sale Availability of Written Warranty Terms (Rule 702); and its Guides for the Advertising of Warranties and Guarantees (Guides).

    2,682 Victims of Credit Card Number Trafficking Scheme To Get Partial Refunds
    The Federal Trade Commission announced today that it has distributed funds out of a $292,500 redress account to 2,682 consumers across the nation who were victimized as part of a telemarketing scheme in which the defendants allegedly were trafficking in consumers’ credit card numbers. According to the FTC, the victims had agreed only to use a 3D camera on a free-trial basis, but the defendants already knew the consumers’ credit card numbers and each of the consumers’ accounts was charged without their knowledge or authorization.
