Event Description
An FTC staff meeting was held to gather and exchange information about the problem of "consumer identity fraud" -- the theft and misuse of consumers' identifying information to establish fraudulent credit accounts. Consumers who have been the victims of this type of fraud, as well as representatives of local police organizations and other federal law enforcement agencies, members of the credit industry and representatives of consumer groups, participated at the meeting. The FTC staff's goal was to learn more about the growth of consumer identity fraud and the problems it creates for consumers and the credit industry, and efforts by industry and others to deter or prevent such fraudulent activity from occurring and to assist consumers who have been victimized. The meeting was open to the media and the general public.
