16 CFR Part 455 Used Motor Vehicle Trade Regulation Rule; Project No. P087604
Being in the car business for over 15 years, we have learnt 1 thing and that is getting a car taken to an independent service station for a check up or a trusty mechanic that a consumer knows is the best option. As a dealer selling cars that are over 7 years old it is very difficult to find service history or branding history aside from using a costly carfax or autocheck reports. The best a customer can do is get a second opinoin just like when you go to the doctor. In those 15 years we've never had a problem with a customer that went and got the vehicle checked out by a professional prior to buying it. People don't read forms and as clear as the current buyers guide is between AS-IS & warrantied vehicle there is absolutely nothing else that can be put on their which would satisfy the consumer. Once a negative second opinion is received by a consumer by an independent service shop they simply walk away from vehicle. It's not good for business but its good for consumers and dealers because the headache and stress that arises from threats, physical harm and lawsuits for selling a car with an unforseen problem are much worse. Instead of putting more on a form lets make the consumers do their homework then to a buy car for bottom dollar and then complain about being cheated, or not told about problems that we don't even know about. As dealers these are not our daily drivers to know everything about these vehicles.
