Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Human pharmacists do not have proper education regarding Pet medications and the pharmacokinetics of the multiple species that are seen in veterinary medicine. Pharmacists are responsible for monitoring all medications a customer is on & looking for potential adverse reactions. Medications work differently in different species, if a client has multiple medications from multiple veterinarians, will a human pharmacist be able to pick up on potential adverse reactions Are human pharmacists going to be recommending OTC medications for pets next Currently any client can ask for a prescription to be written or called into any pharmacy they would like, some even have their prescriptions compounded to make them more palatable for their pets. I feel that requiring Vets to give all clients a written Rx is unnecessary and has the potential to put pets at risk in the future.
