While I understand that rising costs of veterinary care are driving clients to seek less expensive avenues to obtain medications, I feel that pet-based medications and products should only be dispensed by licensed veterinarians. Human pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are not properly educated nor well versed in all of the drugs that veterinarians use. The pharmacist does not play a role in the day-to-day interactions between doctor and pet-owner, therefore, it would be near to impossible for him/her to make proper decisions in regard to contraindicated drugs on a case-by-case basis. I feel that in allowing clients to obtain their medication and products through non-veterinary routes, we are increasing the potential for inappropriate use, contraindicated use and even harmful drug interactions.
