Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
As I understand the house bill as presented veterinarians would be required to write prescriptions for medications whether we dispensed them or not. This would be required whether per owner wanted to purchase from us or another venue in order to make sure people were aware of their options. My experience over the last 29 years of being in practice has shown me that consumers, especially since the advent of the Internet area very much aware of their options. Owners of pers with chronic medical conditions surf the net for information and will subsequently realize that medications can be obtained from a variety of sources. Pet owners that are getting a one time prescription like the convenience of getting the medications at their visit vs. having to stop somewhere else. I've had very few clients want to do this for something their pet would only be on for a short period. Over half of our hospital pharmacy is veterinary exclusive medications which can't be obtained at a human pharmacy anyway. I'm not sure what " problem" exists that this house bill is trying to solve. Consumers are pretty savvy.
