Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
As a practicing veterinarian, I routinely write prescriptions for clients to fill through online or local pharmacies. My greatest concern with sending clients to a human pharmacy or online is that they do not get proper counseling as to possible side effects and adverse reactions. Human pharmacists do not receive training in animal pharmacology, nor do I expect them to. If questions arise when the prescription is picked up, often the answers are incorrect. I was personally told by a pharmacy tech, who did not know I was a veterinarian, "that the side effects are all the same in people and animals". This is blatantly false.
