The problem of (obscenely) over-priced pet meds is exacerbated by consolidation within the industry. Small and independent vets are being gobbled up by large national veterinary corporations that gouge vets for wholesale meds prices, leaving vets little alternative but to pass the cost along. The consumer is left holding the dirty end of the stick. I've had animals for 50 years and have watched three reasonably-priced independent vets retire, only to have their replacements go corporate, resulting in immediate cost increases of 15-40% for the same services and meds. Look to the corporate suppliers behind the vets, not just the practitioners.
