Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Requiring veterinarians to give written prescriptions for all drugs prescribed will only increase cost to consumers. At this point in time, majority of veterinarians give written prescriptions or approve inter net reqests for drugs at seemingly no cost. Of course businesses must run profitably and any time spent for these out of clinic prescriptions is rolled into "overhead" costs which clients eventually are charged for in increased fees for other services like exam fees. If vets are required to give written prescriptions for all drugs even if clients prefer to obtain the medications from the clinic, it adds labor and time costs that will increase cost of business and ultimately unnecessary higher prices to veterinary consumers.
