I am a veterinarian, trained in the health, the diseases, and the physiology of non-human animals. I am not formally trained in inventory, sales, mark-up, or turn-over. But as a veterinary practice owner, I was forced to learn these things. Unfortunately, when I prescribe medications to an outside pharmacy, the pharmacist is unlikely to be trained in the health, disease, or physiology of my patients. I welcome the opportunity to relieve my duties of retailer, and resume my duties as veterinarian solely. However, I feel it is only fair to my patients, and to the families of these patients, that pharmacists be trained in differences in physiology across many of the more common species encountered in everyday practice.
