Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
PLEASE take Sergeants and Hartz Mountain Flea products OFF the market PERMANENTLY -- these products have been KILLING or seriously injuring (neurologic damage)cats and dogs (of ALL sizes and ages). Hartz and Sergeant's are the leading poisoners (but I am aware that there are other, cheap OTC Flea products that also kill or seriously injure cats and dogs -- my cat was also injured by one that had Pyrethryns -- Hartz and Sergeants have Permethryn (sp ), which is closely related to Pyrethryns) The low price of these cheap OTC products leads pet owners to believe that they can save money to kill fleas on their pets -- when in reality, the money they save is NIL - especially if the animal dies, or is permanently nerve-damaged. In either case, the money spent at the vet for remedial treatment after the pet is poisoned by these OTC products is FAR more money than what the pet owner would have spent had they taken their pet to the vet, and had the proper flea meds administered to their pet(s), with the ability (since they are still at the vet s office) to reverse any potential problems in the VERY SLIM chance that the pet is allergic to those prescribed flea meds (doubtful, but possible, in any and all cases of medication procedures). And of course, this also takes an emotional toll-- the pet will almost always show terrible signs of toxicity poisoning minutes or even seconds after these cheap OTC flea meds are administered by a well-intentioned owner who is unaware of the dangers of Hartz and Sergeants (and other OTC0 flea killing products. And too many times, it is WAY too late to bring the pet to the vet before it dies. These toxic flea products need to be abolished. There is no excuse for selling these products, in light of the terrible reactions that so many well-loved pets have had to them.
