Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Veterinarians already provide prescriptions when asked and direct clients to appropriate sources. Human pharmacists are not trained in veterinary prescriptions and can make dangerous or even fatal mistakes due to lack of information. Animals metabolize drugs differently than humans and often differently from other animal species. Drug dosages also varies. Substitutions may or may not be appropriate. One reason veterinarians are involved in the process is to safeguard animals. Forcing the process is not doing anyone any favors other than the industry giants that stand to gain financially from this. At the very least, veterinarians should be able to be compensated for creating the appropriate prescription for an animal (this should not necessarily be a free service).
