I strongly oppose HR1406 as it directly and negatively impacts how I may perform my profession. The bill is redundant and unnecessary and exposes my clients and companions to undue risk. Many of the goals of the proposed bill are already in practice as prescriptions are written upon request and filled via phone, fax or internet. Unfortunately, the bill places veterinarians in a legal and ethical dilemma if a prescription may be incorrectly filled by a pharmacy that is not accredited/licensed. Additionally, pharmacists are not veterinary health specialists and unfamiliar with an individual pet nor their case history. Thus pharmacists are unlikely to be able to advise clients properly in the care of their animal companions. The proposed bill is inefficient and cumbersome, wasting time writing prescriptions which many owners would rather fill at our hospital. That is all valuable time I could be using helping other pets in need.
