Parker Center Animal Clinic
Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
To whom it may concern, I am a veterinarian and owner of Parker Center Animal Clinic in Parker, CO. As a veterinarian and small business owner I am writing you to request that you do not support H.R. # 1406: The Fairness to Pet Owners Act of 2011. Our state veterinary board already regulates written prescriptions and pet owners/clients are already able to request written prescriptions for any of the medications we prescribe. This already occurs on a daily basis. This bill will mandate additional regulatory burdens that are not necessary. Requiring written prescriptions for every medication will impede our ability to provide efficient service to our clients, will increase the use of resources (we are a paperless practice and limit the use of paper/ink as much as possible), and will increase our cost and therefor cost to the consumer. The most concerning aspect is that this bill will drive the filling of prescriptions to human pharmacies. Patient care and veterinary education will be taken out of the hands of the veterinary team (veterinarians, technicians, and front desk personell) and will transition to human pharmacists that have no veterinary training. This will lead to a decrease in patient care and will negatively affect the pet owners and their pets that this bills states it is trying to protect. There are many reasons to not support this bill as it will negatively affect all sides- the veterinarians and small business owners and more importantly the pet owners and their pets. Please do not support this bill.
