Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
I am a veterinarian in Peachtree City, Georgia. I have been in practice for 23 years. Veterinarians are in a unique position regarding the health of animals, especially concerning pet pharmaceuticals. Pharmacists are not trained regarding animal health and some of the unique drug interactions we encounter. Because of this, I believe veterinarians need to be integrally involved in the prescribing of and fulfillment of veterinary pharmaceuticals. In our small animal hospitals, we provide a wide variety of pharmaceuticals obtained from ethical sources. In addition, we provide a written prescription to our clients to obtain drugs we might not inventory and at any time we are requested to do so by our clients. This is mandated by or state veterinary practice act. I believe federal oversight in this area, such as would occur under proposed H.R. 1406, would be redundant and would cause undue regulatory and administrative burdens on veterinary practices. In addition, it would be an encroachment on state jurisdiction and would likely put our patients and the pet owning consumers in our state at risk of our patients receiving incorrect medication or medication of poor quality.I fully support our clients right to purchase their pet s medication at a pharmacy of their choice. However, I believe federal intervention regarding this issue is not necessary to achieve this goal.
