I have been a Veterinarian for 26 years. Some of the kids I saw with their parents all those years ago, now come in with their own kids and pets.I have seen a lot of good changes in Veterinary medicine. As a former Chairman of the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medicine, I have helped write and review the state's rules and regulations. I believe in good quality progressive medicine. I spend over 30 hours a year on continuing education, seminars and round table discussions. I read Veterinary Medical Journals. I think competition is good. I am not the cheapest Vet in town nor the most expensive. If a client asks for a written presciption they get one. I have given written prescriptions to clients when I know the Walmart or Publix has the antibiotic cheaper(even if they did not ask). I always tell them our price and ask them to let me know what they pay for it at the pharmacy. We charge less than most on-line pharmacies. Our money stays in the local area. Employs local people. Pay taxes in our town and in our State. I would disagree with bill H.R.1406. First, I see on average 24 clients a day. I am here from 8:00am to 6:00 pm. The consulting time required by this bill would add at least 5 to 7 minutes to each visit. I do not have an extra 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day. This would be non revenue generating time. Who pays my staff Second, animal physiology and pharmacology are different for the 2 legged and 4 legged animals. A 2 legged (human) pharmacist does not have the training to consult with pet owners, nor do I have the training or licensce to consult on humans. Would a wife ask her husband to consult with a Veterinarian prior to his vasectomy The anatomy is similar. Case in point. Two weeks ago a local pharmacist told a client she could save about $8.00 using a different insulin for her pet. The new insulin works differently, shorter halflife. Her dog's blood glucose spiked. I am still trying to get her pet reregulated on the correct insulin. This week I saw a kitten for an infection. I had given the owner a prescription for an antibiotic and a sample of an antihistamine(chlorpheniramine). She got the antibiotic and asked the pharmacist for more antihistamines. She was given a medicine that children use that contained tylenol. If you did not know, tylenol is fatal in cats. I believe when I give the best care to my patients and give the best service to my clients I am building my practice. If I or any other Veterinarian do not provide the best care then the clients will seek care somewhere else. Veterinarians are independent small business owners, we do not need more government regulation. This bill will add expense across the board to every client. I feel that some large pharmacies are trying to push a bad bill to pad their pockets. H.R.1406 is a flawed bill. Please do not support this bill.
