Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Pet Medications Workshop, project # P12-1201. The idea that pet owners are at a disadvantage with regard to their pets' medications does not make sense. They already get prescriptions regularly from their veterinarian. In Florida where I practice we are required to give the client a written prescription for medication when requested. This we readily do. What the public does not realize is that veterinarians have relied partly on medication income to allow them to offer other services at the relatively low prices they do. In addition, stocking these medications allows us to treat emergency cases right away at any time of day or night without restriction. If the commercial interests are allowed to push through their legislation, consumer prices for veterinary services will increase due to lost income. Emergency care of pets will also suffer. I respectfully ask that you let the commercial interests compete like everybody else-not with legislation that unfairly penalizes the veterinarian. We are already battling to save our profession as it is.
