Forcing veterinarians to write prescriptions would be a terrible mistake. It cannot be compared to the human medical industry as that industry is largely dominated by insurance companies. The veterinary industry is not and as such veterinarians are forced to charge much lower fees than medical doctors for the same services and prescription medications due to the fact that the consumer is paying out of pocket (as opposed to an insurance company footing the bill). Forcing veterinarians to write prescriptions would discourage private veterinary small businesses as it is impossible to compete with the billion dollar internet "pet medicine" companies. It also would increase the amount of time spent on paperwork and recordkeeping thus taking away from the time spent doing what the consumer is paying for. Thus, the added cost to the veterinarian would either have to be "eaten" or passed along to the consumer, thereby increasing the cost of veterinary services.
