Birds and Exotics Animal Care
Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
We have an exotic animal practice so we treat all types of birds, small mammals(rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, rats, mice, ect...) and reptiles (snakes, lizards and turtles/tortoises, terrapins). Our patients are the animals so we have a 3rd party involved in the equation vs. physicians. The hardest part of our practice in teaching owners how to properly medicate their exotic animals. If we had to send people out to pick up a prescription and have the pharmacist instruct them how to (ie. medicated their snake) it would be counter productive and it would totally jeopardize the outcome of our treatment success. This important decision should be made by an informed board, not by a group of people trying to "make an extra buck". Thanks!
