This will impact pet health unfavorably due to the duplication of prescriptions, owners filling prescriptions for medications twice (at vet clinic and the pharmacy). Our income through in-house pharmacy is about 5-10% of our income. Should this be altered by HR1406 then to stay in business we would have to raise all prices which will negatively affect the consumer to limit care for their pets. It is not necessary for veterinarians to provide written prescriptions to clients because we provide medications from our own pharmacy or fax rx to a local pharmacy. If clients bring their written prescriptions to a regular pharmacist there is a chance for inaccurate information to be provided to the client because pharmacists are not trained for animal medical care and may not know side effects and interactions as pertaining to the pet. As veterinarians, we also won't have verification as to whether pet owners actually have filled the prescription if they don't have the prescription filled in-house.
