Certainly, consumers should have every opportunity to seek fulfillment of their treatment options, whether it be at a veterinary establishment or at a pharmacy, whether it be on the internet or local to the community. However, there should be regulation of all sites to verify that a proper patient - veterinarian relationship exist - without solicitation of the veterinarian by a pharmaceutical company - and that the consumer be provided with products that have been approved by the FDA and other regulatory agencies regarding the product, its efficacy, it safety (both animal and human) and its shelf life. Conscious of the current costs of many of our medications, our office tries to make every effort to provide a fair charge for these items, but at our clients' request, do not have any problems with prescribing specific items. Part of the problem is that current advertising choices is consumer driven to suggest or demand certain treatments, when medical practitioners may have other thoughts about treatment options. We have also experienced extra work when pharmaceutical companies petition to have prescriptions filled / refilled when treatment has not been authorized. It is more convenient for consumers to try to get around the veterinarian with the use of outside pharmacies. Many times I have heard, "I didn't know I needed a prescription." So I would recommend caution and preferably better regulation of ALL dispensing companies and the veterinarian should not be excluded.
