Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
My hospital underprices PetMed Express across the board and yet clients may ask for, and are promptly given a prescription if they prefer to do buisness with an online pharmacy. Federal Legislation to correct a problem that does not exist will add an excessive layer of red tape and bury me in paperwork. My hospital will not be able to offer the inexpensive care my clients expect for their pets when I am forced to essentially give my business to the competition of online pharmacies and Walmart. I will raise my prices when Federal regulation forces business away from me and I will hire less or shrink my current payroll. Human pharmacists are not educated in animal medications and cannot properly advise pet owners. The fact that Tylenol kills cats and dogs may be widely known but many other equally serious drug issues for pets are not and human pharmacist have no animal expertise. Of course we could ask human pharmacists to take classes on the topic of veterinary pharmacology and be certified in the subject, but then you would face their costs and reluctance to meet that Federal regulation. Veterinary care remains a bargain compared with human medicine despite the fact that veterinarians have 8 years of college education similar to human medical doctors. We have keep costs for routine care very low. My hospital employs 35, does a complete hysterectomy on your pet (with state of the art anesthesia, monitoring, and pain meds)for an average cost of under $150. Starting salaries for veterinarians averages $65,000 with over $100,000 in college loan debt. This is a non-existing problem looking for a Federal Government solution. Leave it alone. Pet already have an expert in Veterinary pharmacology - their Vet - who will give them a script to buy elsewhere if they prefer. Thank you and my response represents 6 vets/35 currently employed people. Sharon L. Moore Rose-Rich Veterinary Clinic Richmond, Texas
