Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Pharmacists are currently responsible for delivering medication to owners that carry a script for their pets. Pharmacists are not trained on medication application, dosage or counter indications and side effects. Veterinarians are educated about these issues. It would be fine for pharmacists to fill scripts from veterinarians if they had a 2 year education in animal only pharmacology. Most pharmacies like WalMart and CVS actually charge more than veterinarians. Adding another layer to the distribution of medication for pets will only cost the owners more. One large problem with the pharmacy issue is that my clients won't take the extra gas and time (one hour or more) to get the script filled. This greatly reduces the compliance of therapy and puts our pets at higher risk just to big business can get a margin. What they don't understand is that convienence saves much more money than a minor discount at some pharmacy on the other side of town. Please look at this issue as just another place where the government can start the goal of reducing regulation on small business. We do employee many more than large business.
