Sabal Chase Animal Clinic
Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
I am a receptionist at a small animal hospital. I have many concerns about this law. I worry that pets will not get the proper dosing of medication. I worry that clients will not pick up medication for their pets and we will have no way of knowing they are not treating their pet until it's too late. I worry about getting multiple phone calls from pharmacies that do not understand instructions. This has happened before already. I would hesitate to purchase my medications from a place that does not understand it's effects on pets. Also, all questions normally asked of the pharmacist would have to be referred back to the veterinarian. Pharmacists are not trained on the reactions and side effects of medications on animals. Nor are they trained on dosing. I also worry that my place of employment will have to raise prices on services because we are losing pharmacy sales. This will make us lose clients and business. This will mean cutting hours, less chance of raises, or maybe even being laid off. With medications being dispensed by outside pharmacies, I see many phone calls in the future. Phone calls from clients with questions that the pharmacist couldn't answer, phone calls from pharmacies for clarification, and less compliance from our clients.
