Animal Health Consultant
Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Consumers have many choices when it comes to pet medications and very cost effective means of saving on pet medications. Price competition are you kidding me, veterinary health has many affordable means of getting medication for ones pet. The industry cannot compare because human pharmaceutical drugs are a 500%+ markup that someone almost needs to have healthcare insurance to afford the medications. If the government wants to get involved maybe they should start with making human healthcare more cost effective, but wait they can't because the exorbitant amount of cost that goes into human health so you have to have high fees to pay for most care. Pet owners can obtain written, portable prescriptions that they can fill wherever they choose just not Wal-Mart or Target or another big business store chain that gives the government a lot of money. You see, if you allow people to get a script for a pet medication and then walk out of the veterinarian s office and get it filled at Wal-Mart or Target etc... Then you will be undermining the veterinary profession and their business. Veterinarians work hard because it is their business to see pet owners and recommend what is best for their pet. Not to mention that veterinarians have in many cases the same amount of schooling and loans that a medical doctor has, if not more. Let s see, human pharmaceutical have always been available at pharmacies, and animal health products have always been at veterinarians. So if you never changed human doctors and their prescribing habits why in the world would you mess with veterinarians and change theirs means of prescribing. Yes, let a pet owner get a prescription for an animal health product and go to any vet to get the medicine, because there are veterinary clinics that provide less expensive products and services. If you open prescription vet products to be filled at big chain pharmacies, veterinarians will not be able to compete with a big chains, you will cause something to vanish that they do make a profit on and in turn use to pay the bills. So if the government wants to continue to eat up small business owners profits a little at a time you re going to have even more angry business owners upset. Last but not least, pet owners have and will continue to have the ability as consumers to verify the safety and efficacy of pet medications that they purchase from veterinarians, all they have to do is go to the manufacturer s website.
