Great Northwest Animal Hospital
Request for Comments and Announcement of Workshop on Pet Medications Issues, Project No. P121201
Most veterinarians have a policy in place allowing clients to receive a written prescription if they desire one. Our professional organizations consider it unethical not to provide a written prescription when requested. Clients may also vote with their feet and leave a veterinary practice that does not provide a prescription when asked. That being said, human pharmacists do not have the training or experience to deal with all of the animal drug side effects and interactions the way they do with humans. There are also medications (e.g., heartworm preventions)that, if not filled and administered promptly after testing, could cause a severe and possibly fatal reaction if not given promptly as prescribed. Veterinarians must be allowed to get a signed waiver from a client that chooses to fill a prescription elsewhere to protect them from improper use/delayed filling of a prescription.
