2010 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act Rule Review
I do not believe COPPA should be expanded to include everyone under 18. This will lead to websites demanding identification and age verification for all new members, such as drivers license and credit card numbers. This will actually reduce people's privacy by removing our anonymity. Also, it will have the effect of restricting those under 18 from using the Internet, which they should have the same right to access as people over 18. Putting a walled garden up around children and teens may seem like a good way to protect them, but only cuts them off from the real world that they need to learn how to navigate and deal with, rather than hide from. Please do everyone a favor and leave COPPA as it stands now, so that adults can retain their anonymity and teens can continue to explore the world they are so close to joining. Thank you.
