FTC Seeks Public Comments on Two More Proposed Whole Foods Divestitures, Docket No. 9324, FTC File No. 071 0114
I am writing to support the transfer of the Alfalfa's Market IP to A-M Holdings. As a resident of Boulder for the past 30 years, I was witness to the opening of the original Alfalfa's and the ensuing culture it created in Boulder. Even when the store was taken over by Wild Oats, and then Whole Foods Market, the population of Boulder still referred to the store as Alfalfa's. So embedded into the Boulder culture, the store was even the subject of a song written in the late 90's by national recording act Leftover Salmon: "When I grow up, I wanna work at Alfalfa's Where the cheese is dairy free A birkenstocks, spandex, necktie, patchouli grocery store I'll have a job, picking through the produce- no pesticides for me! I'll be a working modern income socially conscience Boulder hippie" The above lyrics tell the story - Alfalfa's is a Boulder icon as well as a landmark exemplifying Boulder's relationship to the natural food industry. Furthermore, I have no doubt that when Alfalfa's re-opens under its original name, a plethora of customers will shop at the store for both the nostalgia and the historical precedence of good quality natural food set by the original Alfalfa's in the 80's. In the minds of many Boulderites, the name Alfalfa's rightfully belongs to the building located at the corner of Arapahoe and Broadway. A-M Holdings is wanting to purchase this location and operate it as Alfalfa's - nothing could be more fitting for healthy competition for Whole Foods Market in Boulder. This issue goes beyond corporate competition. It is a culmination of commerce, history and culture. I urge you to approve the purchase of the Alfalfa's location and IP by A-M Holdings. Thank you for your consideration of my arguments for the people and culture of Boulder.
