FTC Seeks Public Comments on Trustee's Proposal to Divest One Store under Whole Foods Market Inc. Divestiture Order, Docket No. 9324, FTC File No. 071 0114'
I am a life long resident of Maine. I live approximately 25 miles from the former Wild Oats Store on Marginal Way in Portland and work nearby this location (Commercial Street. I strongly support this sale. I am a regular shopper at Hannaford grocery store in Topsham (which has a store near this location) and shop once or twice a week at Whole Grocer. Every time I travel to Massachusetts, I find a Trader Joe's store on my travel route and stop in. The products at each of these stores are different and will add to consumer options in Maine. I expect to continue to shop at Hannaford and Whole Grocer and to add Trader Joe's to my list of grocery shopping venues. Each of these stores is unique and provides different grocery options. Like so many places, Portland has been hurt by the recession and economic downturn. This property was redeveloped just a short time before Whole Grocer acquired Wild Oats. The promise of the redevelopment of Marginal Way has been stymied by having this store sit vacant for several years. I am sure it has hurt Eastern Mountain Sports (neighboring store) to have the space next door empty. It is not good for the city to allow this property to sit idle. With the University of Southern Maine nearby and the new student dormitory and recent development of Drummond Woodsum's office building across the street from this location, it makes perfect sense for Trader Joe's to locate at this spot. I urge FTC approval of this sale.
