16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures
It should be wrong for companies to advertise "free credit report" then tack on a lot of fine print about how you're being signed up for a monitoring service that requires you to cancel in a specific time frame. But the whole credit report thing has become a joke. I have tried over the last ten years to get copies of my credit report - which happens to have a fraud alert on it - and been unsuccessful at doing so. I am being asked for copies of all sorts of documents from my driver license to a utility bill to verify my identity with no protection whatsoever from my identifying information being used by their own non-background checked employees! And I have lived in the same place, using the same mailing address and name for the last 10 years. There should be some regulation in place which removes the high percentage of weight connected solely to a credit report or score for business transactions.
