This past week I went to the annualcreditreport.com website to get the annual free reports from Equifax, Experian, and Transunion. I have done this before, most recently in March 2008. There was no problem with Equifax or Experian and getting the report was straightforward. For Transunion the only option on their site is to buy a report and pay with a credit card or gift certificate. Because this was clearly not "free" I called them to find out what the problem was with their website. They checked their records, saw that I was eligible, and gave me a gift certificate code. Using this code I was able to get my Transunion report without cost, but still at a page that requested payment of some kind. I think this is misleading and Transunion is counting on people not to call to complain but pay the $11.00 fee instead. They need to update their database and use their link to direct users to a truly free credit report site.
