16 CFR Part 610 Amendments to Rule to Prevent Deceptive Marketing of Credit Reports and to Ensure Access to Free Annual File Disclosures
Suggestions for modifying the current format of the FTC's free annual credit report: 1. Prohibit ALL advertising, links, etc. from commercial sources on the FTC website. The site should provide only and exclusively the free report available to consumers once a year from the 3 agencies. 2. Require any commercial site providing a credit report, free or for a fee, and/or score to state in BOLD letters that "THIS IS NOT THE SITE TO OBTAIN THE FREE ANNUAL CREDIT REPORT PROVIDED BY THE GOVERNMENT" 3. If the inquiry is reported online, allow the report to remain available for a week or two in case the individual making the inquiry wishes to review it online following the initial request. 4. Add a statement that an individual's credit SCORE is separate from the report and is available only from a commercial source and usually has a fee charged for the score.
