I do not have any delinquent debts, but in the past two years, I have been hounded by over a dozen debt collectors. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight. Apparently, a deadbeat used to own my cell phone number, and he has several delinquent accounts placed in collection. His debts have been sold and resold among the debt collectors. Although initially I notified the debt collectors in writing that I am not the debtor, I am getting no relief. The debt collection industry should maintain a centralized database of no-longer-valid phone numbers. I have stopped answering my phone from callers whose numbers I do not recognize, and I have discontinued my carrier's voicemail service. I feel that my rights have been violated. I would like the FTC to be mindful of the many innocent people caught in this out-of-control industry.
