From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
I am a former journalist and a writer, and I would just like to make it known that I am thoroughly against the federal government funding journalism or "bailing it out" as you will. Whatever the problems of the media industry, government control is NOT the answer. Such control would set a dangerous precedent, and endanger the free press, speech and first amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Dissenting voices could be stifled and that would certainly not serve the best interests of the people in this country. Please do not allow this to happen. How far would the Civil Rights legislation passed in 1964 have gotten if the governments in that era could have stifled cries for justice out via the media? Things like that could happen, should government be allowed to control the media. If media is struggling, they need to find new ways to be more diverse in the ways they report the news than in the past in order to be competitive in today's market. I repeat, please keep the U.S. Constitution in mind as you consider this legislation. Thank you.
