From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
The proposals outlined in the staff document relative to media support and reinvention of newspapers is breathtaking in many respects. It is well meaning but it is the worst policy proposal I've seen come out of an agency in many a year. According to the proposal the government will find ways to help support newspapers in a variety of ways including funding reporters. Does conflict of interest ring a bell with the Board? This is not even a slippery slope; it's a cliff over which this nation must not fall. The fourth estate becomes a funded stepchild of the government? Heresy is too kind a word. Get off this stump and let the American people decide via competition what they wish to fund. I am forwarding my very concerned comments to my representatives and ask for your urgent reconsideration of so bad a proposal. Larry D. Martin
