From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
I oppose any action by the FTC to regulate, aid, tax or interfere in any manner with the free market of journalism & free speech. I do not consent to any of the proposed actions regarding the "Future of Journalism" and/or recommendations in the "Reinventing Journalism" report and conference. The entire premise that the federal government, including the FTC, has jurisdiction to manipulate or intervene in gathering and dissemination of free or protected speech, including internet information, is strictly forbidden by the United States Constitution. Cease and desist immediately. The Future of Journalism report and the "Reinventing Journalism" recommendations cross over the forbidden line into political conflict of interest on the part of this Administration. The "Future of Journalism" and proposals to "Reinvent Journalism" are designed to un-level the playing field which the American public has freely created with their personal economic choices. A small number of government employees or their academic/public sector advisers will never be wiser or better informed to direct or shape the market of journalism than billions of individual decisions made by a free public investing their personal resources where they find the best value in truth. The Constitution forbids interference by government to favor it's political allies against their opponents which is exactly what all these "recommendations" do. Nor does the FTC have any jurisdiction to intervene by way of tax or impose economic benefits or burdens by government fiat on the private market of journalism beyond the very limited need to adjudicate monopoly. Given this very limited scope of authority the FTC would better serve the citizens of the United States by investigating the monopoly of the Associated Press and economic collusion of Network Broadcast organizations, ABC, NBC and CBS in particular. I am dead set against "government doing anything to "Reinvent Journalism" and hereby withdraw my consent to any governing authority that attempts such un-constitutional and criminal actions.
