From Town Criers to Bloggers: How Will Journalism Survive the Internet Age?
This initiative does violence to press freedom, is inconsistent with the First Amendment and is contrary to the notion of civic free choice. "Journalism" and, more importantly, an informed public do not benefit from this interference. The FTC is, and always will be, incompetent in this matter and cannot possibly supplant the force of collective choice of consumers of information. The FTC and supporters of this initiative need to accept the simple fact of this fundamental incompetence. The FTC seeks to impose a political agenda where the only legitimate actors are citizen consumers. The FTC must end this initiative, accepting that citizen consumers are fully capable of rational judgments, and accepting the consequences of those choices.
