Transatlantic RFID Workshop on Consumer Privacy and Data Security
As a consumer, I regularly take advantage of RFID technology to add convenience and security in my daily life. Recently during a trip to Washington, DC, my SmartTrip card saved me countless minutes as I used the public transportation system from arrival in Baltimore and my travels throughout DC. To my knowledge, there have been no reported instances of data breaches through the use of RFID-enabled credit cards. I also take advantage of the speed on the PA turnpike by using my EZPass transponder to move quickly through the tolling locations. It has saved me at least 10 minutes each working day, sometimes more, in my travels to and from work. I think responsible use of RFID-enabled cards and continued discussions between government and industry will allow for continuing innovation that provide convenience and protections for consumers.
