I am writing on behalf of the Soap and Detergent Association (SDA). We are a trade association representing over one hundred manufacturers of household, industrial and institutional cleaning products for the U.S. market and the companies that supply ingredients and finished packaging to that industry. The cleaning products industry employs over 30,000 individuals across the United States with annual shipments of products topping $17 billion, and SDA members produce more than 90 percent of the cleaning products marketed in the U.S. SDA and several of our member companies attended the FTC's workshop on green packaging claims this past April 30th in Washington, D.C. As part of the workshop, we understand that FTC has established a docket which is open for the submission of comments through May 19, 2008. Though SDA participated as a stakeholder during the development of the original Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims back in the mid-1990's, there were a lot of thought-provoking aspects to the current workshop. As such we wish to submit comments to the docket, however, we believe we will need more time to consult with our members and consolidate our thoughts. Therefore, we would like to request a 45-day extension of the deadline to submit comments until July 3, 2008. We appreciate your consideration of our request and look forward to hearing from you.
