Preliminary Proposed Nutrition Principles to Guide Industry Self-Regulatory Efforts, Project No. P094513
I am writing on behalf of 14 organizations that have partnered together to make policy and environment change in order to reduce obesity and chronic disease in the US. We support the Interagency Working Group on Food Marketed to Children's proposed nutrition principles and marketing definitions. The current self regulatory program is flawed. Studies show that the majority of foods marketed to children are still high in calories, staurated fat, sugars or salt. DID YOU KNOW that 21% or our daily calorie intake comes from liquid calories And that sugar-sweetened beverages account for at least 20% of the weight gained in the last 30 years We support the IWG's proposal to use a food based approach to ensure that the foods marketed to children make a meaningful contribution to a healthful diet. Why subject our kids to advertising of foods that will harm them The foods that children eat (and those that should be advertised) should be NUTRIENT DENSE! We ask that you make the principles/guidelines STRONGER, not weaker. For the health of our children/teens and the health of our nation. REMEMBER that obesity costs money and leads to chronic disease which presntly accounts for 75% of the $2.5 trillion we in the US spend each year on health care. Thank you for receiving my comments.
