I am against the FTC requirement that MTNA get rid of its code of ethics. The purpose of MTNA is to encourage cooperation among teachers, not competition. Music teachers are supposed to support each other, help each other, exchange teaching ideas all for the good of the student. The nature of music making is cooperation. Teachers perform together and students perform together in groups. Music teachers are not selling a product, they are educating children. Teachers have a long, trusting relationship with their students, sometimes lasting for more that a decade, and the code of ethics of MTNA supports this trusting relationship. The code says teachers should respect the relationship that teacher colleagues have with their students. The MTNA does what is best for the student and the code of ethics was a recommended guideline for the proper procedure for a student to switch teachers if the student wants to. It never said that students could not switch teachers. The code of ethics was a way to facilitate switching teachers that would not harm the trusting relationship between teacher and student. Teachers actively soliciting students from other teachers will always break the necessary trust that exists between teacher and student.
