I am sorry that MTNA has been forced to delete from its ethics policy the clause against soliciting students from other teachers' studios. My husband and I, both piano teachers have always been scrupulous about honoring this policy. He has had a number of experiences of having students returning from piano competitions with stories of other teachers coming to them after they played, saying, "You should leave your present teacher and study with me." I understand the reasoning behind the FTC's action, but it seems a pity. Because music teachers work with children and young people, they should maintain high standards of personal conduct. Music teachers are a relatively small community, which generally tries to maintain collegiality and integrity within and among their groups. I hope that ethical teachers will continue to honor this policy out of respect for their profession and as a statement of their own values.
