I was a member of MTNA and WSMTA for about 10 years. The code of ethics was put in to place because this organization is a volunteer group of music teachers who come together with their students to provide many educational events, to provide adjudication and competition to benefit students. The code exists NOT to keep students from opting to switch to another music teacher - but to request that teachers not go to other teacher's students at these combined studio events I have mentioned - and try to convince students of another teacher to switch teachers. It happens regularly that students DO switch to other teachers - AT THE STUDENT's seeking and inquiring of other studios. When this has happened (students opting to switch to another teacher) in my chapter of MTNA - teachers stepped down from teaching a student who was ready to move on to a more advanced level or a different teaching style for the best possible outcome for the student. This organization is FOR THE STUDENTS. It is akin to an organization of lawyers, for example, who - not only get together as lawyers to learn more about their profession - but who also bring ALL OF THEIR CLIENTELE and expose them to all of the other lawyers in that association. Wouldn't a code of ethics of decent and respectful behavior towards the other lawyers in the association be in order? This whole thing is ridiculous that teachers who work so hard to improve the lives of students - and who choose to belong to an organization that respects other teachers should be challenged in this way. SO WRONG!!! I don't belong to this organization any more only because I am now working on a solo performance and recording career. I support them wholeheartedly in being respectful of one another.
